Who is Leng Tu?

You hear of the Herald long before you see him. In the Village of Lu, Lan Shaodi explains his trade: the Herald makes his puppets by putting the minds of living people into them, and a child’s mind is the purest of all. The village itself is his work. A letter left there reports that every villager of Lu has been turned into a puppet, and that the Soul Displacement Art is steadily approaching perfection.

For centuries the Thread-Binding Sect has studied Soul Displacement and puppetry, drawing a person’s thoughts out like silk and binding them to a puppet. Its eastern branch answers to the Herald, and the title itself seems to mean an envoy of the Lady of the Veil. The Lady’s sacred scroll says her emissary ties red blossoms over the faces of Buddha statues so she can witness the suffering of the world. Even his own disciples wonder what he really looks like: these days he only ever appears through puppets.

In the Village of Lu his subordinate is Dusk, who oversees the puppetry ritual for him. In Pangzhen his base is the Mirage Estate, where he has posted guards at the gate to give Lei Dang of The Order “a proper welcome”. You fight him in Chapter 12, on Mount Soulrend.

Who Leng Tu is to the others

  • His subordinate

    Dusk

Dusk oversees the puppetry ritual in the Village of Lu for him. According to Lan Shaodi, the two have had a falling out, and the smugglers’ tunnel into Pangzhen has been shut.

“But... the Herald and his subordinate, Dusk, had a falling out. He shut down the smuggler's tunnel, the only way into Pangzhen.”

    In-game dialogue
  • Hired hand

    Lan Shaodi

Lan Shaodi says he is moving orphans from his manor to wherever the Herald makes his puppets, in return for a fortune and a ship out of Pangzhen.

“Master Herald... his work, you see, requires children. Lots of them.”

  • The one he serves

    Meng Hua

“From this day forth, my life belongs to Meng Hua, the Lady of the Veil.” The Lady freed him from his prison of illusion, and he says death would not be enough to repay what she has done for him.

“Death would not be enough to repay what She has done for me.”

    In-game dialogue
  • His old master

    Silk Sect Leader Si Wuya

Si Wuya led the Silk Sect, where the Viper of Seven Venoms and his junior Leng Tu studied side by side. The real Leng Tu talked their master into faking his death with the Viper’s Still Poison, switched it for Silence Poison, and let the Viper take the blame.

“Enough. We'll follow Leng Tu's plan. Viper, bring the medicine.”

    In-game dialogue
  • Partner in schemes

    Zuo Shang

Two years ago Zuo Shang offered him the Chord’s body and the method for making the Radiant Heart, and with Zuo Shang’s help he made it. Each is using the other: Soul sees that Zuo Shang wants the heart and the vessel for himself.

“With Zuo Shang's help, Leng Tu crafted the Radiant Heart that generates endless Sha-Chi.”

  • Poisoned him

    Lei Dang

When Lei Dang came to the Mirage Estate for Zuo Shang, the Herald switched Still Poison and Silence Poison to poison him, replaying in the name of Leng Tu the very scheme that once ruined the Viper.

  • Ally

    The High Elder

The High Elder praises him for securing the Radiant Heart and the Perfect Yin Vessel. Together they plan the ritual at Soulrend Cliff, and the Herald builds Number Ninety-Nine, the puppet that opens the way to the Heart of the Lake.

“Your clever scheme secured the Radiant Heart and the Perfect Yin Vessel. This is your greatest achievement.”

    In-game dialogue
  • Wears her body

    Yu’er

He took over Yu’er’s body and uses it as a stand-in, as he likes to do with bodies like hers.

“Leng Tu has taken over Yu'er’s body, using bodies like hers as substitutes.”

  • Fused three sisters

    Yucong, No. 34 Twisted Puppet

He offered Master Steel his “Three Souls as One” art to cure her junior sisters, Master Frost and Master Chaos. It sealed all three in a single puppet: he had only said it would cure them, never that they would keep their own bodies.

“I only said “Three Souls as One” art could cure them. I never said anything about keeping your original bodies… hehe.”

    In-game dialogue
  • Destroyed him

    Flame

Posing as a humble puppet performer, he won Grandmaster Flame’s letter into the Mirage Estate. When the New Year’s Eve bells drove Flame’s Sha-Chi out of control, he subjected the dying grandmaster to Perfect Transcension and bound his mind with a mask.

“My thanks, Grandmaster Flame... your letter granted me entry to the Mirage Estate.”

Every quest with Leng Tu in it

  1. Story

    The Heart’s Trail

In Pangzhen the trail leads to the Mirage Estate, the Herald’s base. He has packed its gate with guards to “receive” Lei Dang, so you look for another way in, by way of Yu’er’s home in the backstreets and the Serpent Houses.

    How this quest turns out

Even Lei Dang has to take the Herald’s medicine before entering the estate, and the Herald has switched Still Poison and Silence Poison to poison him.

  2. Story

    The Way Forward

The Sacred Vessel, the Radiant Heart, The Order’s plans: every question now leads to the Herald’s Mirage Estate, and this stretch of the story takes you inside and on towards Mount Soulrend.

    How this quest turns out

In a memory he tells the High Elder he already has a way to Mount Soulrend, through the Mourning Hall he built for an old acquaintance and sealed with brick and stone. That sealed wall is the one you blast open with the Tiger Cannon.

  3. Story

    Soulrend Cliff

The last climb, up Mount Soulrend to Soulrend Cliff. The Herald is waiting for you at The Fallen Dream.

    How this quest turns out

Soul names him: “The Herald”? Leng Tu? Or the Viper of Seven Venoms? He calls those empty titles; only the Lady of the Veil is real. Without the Radiant Heart, he warns, she will draw the Blight into the Waking Realm, and he would welcome it.

  4. Mysteries

    The Herald’s Illusion

A strange illusion of his: three archways around a Three-Eyed Puppet, No. 66. Each gate you open opens one more of its eyes. With all three open it blurts out where the Herald lives, the Crimson Manor beneath the tower, and that his favourite is Number Ninety-Nine, which needs two crystal eyes. Take the Puppet’s Tongue and its Yin eye with you.

  5. Mysteries

    The Crimson Manor

The Crimson Manor, his house deep under the Sha-Chi Tower in Weeping Creek Valley, reached by the lift hidden at the tower’s base. Its lock is a puppet called the Mute; give it back its tongue and the way opens. The Herald’s secrets are inside, and beneath the house is the Puppet Scavenger, a failed experiment he locked away to dispose of discarded puppets.

    How this quest turns out

A Memory Flower there shows the Herald with the High Elder, who has sealed the ruins so that only the four Acolytes’ masks, reflected in its mirror at once, can open them.

In the game’s own words

The game’s bestiary note on each form you fight. They are folded shut because some of them give away what happens later.

Leng Tu, Herald of the Veil

He took the name “Leng Tu,” dressed as “Leng Tu,” and in the end became “Leng Tu” in every way, even more cruel and deranged than the original.

At first, he only had to imitate Leng Tu’s words and manner. But every lie demanded another to cover it, and when the disguise could no longer hold, he had no choice but to silence everyone who knew the real Leng Tu. Lies and blood piled up. Cruelty became a habit, and the mask became his true face.

He used that cruelty to please the Lady of the Veil. The Lady he worships is cold-hearted and takes pleasure in watching the suffering of others. She has no use for anything that serves no purpose. If he cannot satisfy her, he has no value and could be cast aside at any moment.

He will never allow himself to become useless. The Viper of Seven Venoms once tasted that suffering all too well. In that lightless prison of illusion, all his talent, kindness, and loyalty were crushed into nothing. He could only cling to life through endless torment, entirely at the mercy of others.

He has become “Leng Tu” through and through. He spreads the Lady of the Veil’s false teachings and conducts Puppet experiments on countless Wulin practitioners and ordinary people. He savors their desperate struggles inside the Puppets, wanting them to suffer as the Viper of Seven Venoms once did. He even switched Still Poison and Silence Poison, using them to poison Lei Dang of the Order and reenact, in the name of “Leng Tu,” the very scheme that once destroyed the Viper of Seven Venoms.

For all his sins, so long as they serve the Lady of the Veil, he gives her everything he has.

Perhaps the Viper of Seven Venoms was destined to suffer that terrible fate. If not, who else could this believer crawling at the Lady of the Veil’s feet have become?

What happens to Leng Tu

The end of the story for this character

The Mirage Estate’s shadow play tells who he was. The Viper of Seven Venoms and his junior Leng Tu studied medicine side by side in the Silk Sect. When the Twisted Master besieged the sect, Leng Tu had their master fake his death with the Viper’s Still Poison, switched it for Silence Poison, killed him in the chaos and pinned it on the Viper. For nearly three years the Viper suffered in a prison of illusion, until the Lady of the Veil freed him, his grudge was avenged, and he took a borrowed name: “From that day forth, the Viper became Leng Tu.”

He took the name, dressed as Leng Tu and in the end became Leng Tu in every way, crueller than the original, silencing everyone who knew the real one. He wants the people in his puppets to suffer as the Viper once did. On Soulrend Cliff, depending on how the run has gone, his last words are either that offering himself to the Blight is all he could ask for, or, at the Lady’s side, “Your Herald… is coming home…”

“Your Herald... is coming home...”
