Who is Lan Shaodi?
Lan Shaodi, the Blue-Clad Young Master, wanders outside the Village of Lu sizing up anyone who makes it that far. His proposition: the Herald makes his puppets from the minds of living people, a child’s mind is the purest, and Lan has taken in orphans and hidden them in his manor in Pangzhen to deliver to the Herald, for a fortune and a ship out of this cursed place.
There is a snag. The Herald and his subordinate Dusk have fallen out, and the smugglers’ tunnel, the only way into Pangzhen, is shut. Soul is heading there anyway, so Lan asks him to reopen it and offers him thirty percent. When Soul asks whether he is not ashamed to disgrace his family’s name, he laughs: in a world like this, who talks about reputation?
In Pangzhen a woman with a smoke-wreathed face asks Soul whether he has knocked on the Lan Manor gate. Young Master Lan promised to get her daughter out of town, she says, and she cannot bear to hear what became of the children.

Played him
The deal with the Herald was a ruse. Ordered to take the children by boat to the Heart of the Lake, Lan played along and hired brave men to sink the boat and get the children out. The Herald saw through it.
“Heh... he saw through the plan! But so what? I met you!”
In-game dialogueTrusted him
Lan brought Soul to the manor and slipped him the key so that, whatever happened, no one could touch the children. Badly hurt, he asks Soul to take them to the dock, where someone will meet him: “looks like the two of us pulled this job together after all!”
“Use the key... open the gate... and take the children to the dock. Someone will meet you there...”

Tales
Young Master Lan
Lan wants the smugglers’ tunnel to Pangzhen reopened. Its way runs through the puppet testing ground beneath the well, blocked by a puppet; clear it and tell him at the village entrance. In Pangzhen he meets you at the Lan Manor gate, slips you the Lan Manor Key and strides off. Touch any bell, then go back to the manor.
How this quest turns out
You find him struck down by the Herald’s assassins. When the town fell he took in over a dozen children, and he only played the Herald’s game to get them out. Open the gate with his key and take the children to the dock; a Wulin Fighter waiting there tells you they are all safe and gives you a token of thanks.
What happens to Lan Shaodi
The end of the story for this character
Lan Shaodi does not survive his wounds. The Wulin Fighter at the dock calls it a shame: carefree as he seemed, he was a true man. To feed those children he had given up his fortune, made countless enemies and even pawned his family’s jade thumb ring. In the final battle he appears once more: all that wandering was not a total waste, he tells Soul, and Soul must keep going, no matter what.
“Heh... looks like the two of us pulled this job together after all!”
