Who is Flame?
Legend says the lion dance began as a way to drive out evil and grew into a dance for blessings. When the Wulin fell into turmoil and Maskwalkers roamed, Flame went back to the old texts, folded martial arts into the dance, and had his disciples fit the lion heads with bronze, iron and blades. The town loved him for it. To evil things, he says, he is a ferocious beast; to the good-hearted, a sacred one.
Every New Year the patrons of the Mirage Estate, up on the hill above Pangzhen, waited for his lion dance. The year Leng Tu came to town was different, and Flame was there when it went wrong.
You meet him in Chapter 4, deep in the Lion Dance Hall: a mask sewn to his face, Senior Mo behind him, the two of them dancing again on burning Plum Blossom Stakes. Fighting him is how Soul gets the lion head the main story needs.
Who Flame is to the others
His Second-in-Command
Senior Mo, Second-in-Command of the Lion Dance Sect, dances the lion’s tail behind him. In the fight they are together again on the stakes, as in the old days.
“Mo!”
In-game dialogueOld friend
Patron Gao, one of the Mirage Estate’s patrons. When Gao fell strangely ill before the New Year, Flame went to see him and warned him he never wanted to see his friend become something he must burn away.
“After all, you're my friend. I would never want to see you become something I must burn away.”
In-game dialogueRespected by him
Lei Dang of the Order speaks of Grandmaster Flame as a man he always respected, and is the one who brings Flame’s lion head back to life.
“Oh? I greatly respected Grandmaster Flame. I take it you've already dealt with him...”

Made him a puppet
Leng Tu came as a humble travelling puppeteer and asked Flame for an introduction to the Mirage Estate; Flame wrote the letter that got him in. On New Year’s Eve the bell set Flame’s Sha-Chi raging, and Leng Tu subjected the dying grandmaster to Perfect Transcension and bound him with a mask.
“My thanks, Grandmaster Flame... your letter granted me entry to the Mirage Estate.”
In-game dialogueLooked on
After New Year’s Eve, Zuo Shang came to the hall with Leng Tu. He saw that Flame had burned his own disciples, and said that Perfect Transcension might keep Flame and Mo alive, but only sealed under the lion skin, asleep forever.
“Even if Perfect Transcension keeps them alive, they'll remain sealed beneath this lion skin, forever asleep.”

Story
The Heart’s Trail
The way on through Pangzhen is blocked by brambles, and Soul needs a weapon that can burn through them. Open the Lion Dance Hall gate, go deep into the hall and face the Lion Dance Grandmaster. He leaves the Dormant Flaming Mane, its fire out; take it to Lei Dang at Jingyang Hall to reignite it.
Collectibles
Lion Dance Grandmaster
Six Memory Flowers of the Lion Dance Grandmaster around Pangzhen, from I. New Year’s Greetings to VI. Wooden Man, the last of them at the Lion Dance Hall. Together they tell Flame’s last New Year.
How this quest turns out
They show Leng Tu, posing as a travelling puppeteer, winning Flame’s letter of introduction to the Mirage Estate; Patron Gao, hollowed out like a half-drunk jar of wine; and the New Year’s Eve feast where the estate’s guards and Patron Gao had turned into wooden puppets, and Senior Mo telling Flame to get out.

Flame, the Mask-Bound Lion Dance Grandmaster
Deep in the Sha-Chi-choked ruins of the lion dance hall, fire lights the night. Grandmaster Flame holds the steel lion head high, with Second-in-Command Senior Mo as the tail behind him. The two step onto the burning Plum Blossom Stakes, leaping and turning in perfect sync, their every movement capturing the majesty of the mighty lion.
Yet both dancers are controlled by masks sewn onto their faces. Every leap and lunge carries murderous intent. Saw blades whirl on either side of the lion head like a beast’s fangs, devouring whatever stands before them. The fire spewing from the lion’s mouth can no longer drive away evil. Instead, it burns everything around it, fueled by Sha-Chi.
The disaster began with the New Year’s Eve bells that stirred the Sha-Chi. The uncontrolled flames unleashed a slaughter, burning the people of the estate and the Lion Dance Disciples alike. Flame himself was gravely wounded and left dying in the inferno, where Leng Tu subjected him to Perfect Transcension and used the mask to control his mind.
A lion dancer whose calling was to subdue evil would not become an evil thing himself. With the last of his will, he sealed his own meridians and suppressed his murderous nature. He waits for a new one to pluck the green to come through the flames, end this calamity, and burn away the evils of the world in his stead.
The Lion Dance Grandmaster’s Final Dance
He still dances amid the flames, as he did in years past to the cheers of the crowd, driving out evil and bringing blessings to the people.
At the height of the battle, he stands atop the Plum Blossom Stakes and lets out a long cry, calling his disciples to dance with him. All the lion dancers here have fallen victim to Perfect Transcension, their minds lost. They turn the art of lion dancing into deadly techniques and charge at Soul, only to have Soul defeat them one by one and claim the lion head.
Behind the mask, he watches as Soul leaps onto the high stakes and battles in the form of a lion dancer, and sees in him the hope of the art's continuation. The one to pluck the green he had awaited has finally arrived, to perform the final dance alongside him.
When the dance reaches its end, Soul dons Flame's lion head. As the lion's bright eyes meet Flame's, his own will breaks free of the mask's control in an instant. Flame knows that his life is nearly spent, and before him stands a new lion dancer. The spiritual energy of Heaven and Earth gathers in those eyes.
The Grandmaster can finally depart in peace. The art of lion dancing, and the will to drive out evil, are entrusted to Soul along with the lion head.
What happens to Flame
The end of the story for this character
The bell on New Year’s Eve drove Flame’s Sha-Chi out of control, and the flames burned the people of the estate and the Lion Dance Disciples alike. Dying in the fire, he was given Perfect Transcension by Leng Tu and bound by a mask. With the last of his will he sealed his own meridians, held down his bloodlust, and waited for someone to come through the flames: a new one to pluck the green.
A letter with messy handwriting in Pangzhen, unsigned, reads like his: its writer let the wolf in, has the Perfect Transcension in him, and gives the key to his lion dance hall to “the true one to pluck the green”. The game never names the writer.
In the final dance Soul leaps onto the high stakes and fights like a lion dancer, then takes up Flame’s lion head. As the lion’s eyes meet his, Flame’s own will breaks free of the mask for an instant, and he departs in peace, leaving the art and the lion head with Soul. Near the end he appears once more, as a vision, to tell Soul to practise that lion head well.
