How Phantom Blade Zero boss fights work

  • Blue light = Brutal Move (parry); red light = Killer Move (dodge)
  • A block timed as the hit lands parries it: no Sha-Chi cost, and it drains the attacker's Sha-Chi
  • Running out of Sha-Chi breaches you (or the enemy): the stance breaks and you are open until it refills
  • Switching weapons refills Sha-Chi
  • Die in a boss's second phase and you restart at that phase
  • Swords alone struggle against heavy shields; iron fists and hammers break those defences Official narration, State of Play deep dive, 9:14.
  • Hellwalker brings in fighting-game mechanics: bosses drop fixed patterns and adapt Official narration, State of Play deep dive, 11:19.

Combat: Sha-Chi, parries and difficulty

One, Mó Yuan, has a Chinese name that an official text gives together with the English one; three more have Chinese name plates in the Chinese build of the 2025 demo that match their English plates. Five show a likely Chinese name that we matched ourselves, three have a Chinese name only the press reports, and three have no Chinese name yet. Of the two second phases, Chief Disciple’s Fallen Hope has an official Chinese name plate and the Final Dance has no Chinese name yet. Those counts cover only the bosses shown before launch. The full list is the table above: 63 fights.

Named elsewhere, not listed here

Some figures that sound like bosses are not in the list above, because the sources we read give them no name. DualShockers describes a boss who drinks wine throughout his fight; no source gives his English name. Enemy groups, such as the flanking monks in threes, have no name and are not counted.

Phantom Blade Zero bosses FAQ

How do boss fights work?

Blue flash: parry. Red flash: dodge. Empty the boss’s Sha-Chi to break its stance and open it up. Die in a second phase and you restart at that phase, and beating a major boss usually gives you its weapon.
