Who is Meng Hua?

Almost everything you learn about Meng Hua early on comes from Inanis’ Memory Flowers in the Mirrorwood. Inanis and her daughter were once thrown out into the pouring rain and left half-dead in the mud; Meng Hua, the wife of Inanis’ master, saved them and brought them into the sect. Seven years into her training Inanis saw what Meng Hua had done: the moment she laid eyes on the gifted girl, she had planted a Rift inside her that connects to the Discordance.

Inanis’ master had his own warning: his wife had gone mad and was using these Rifts to feed something monstrous within the Discordance, and he never thought she would harm a little girl. Inanis swore to wipe her out, body and soul. When Mu Tianmiao came to recruit Inanis for The Order, Meng Hua was part of his offer: she was one of the Eleven, and The Order would clash with them sooner or later.

You fight her in Chapter 12, on Mount Soulrend, at The Fallen Dream bell.

  1. Story

    Soulrend Cliff

The last story quest. Climb Mount Soulrend, blast through the sealed wall with the Tiger Cannon and reach Soulrend Cliff, where it all ends.

    How this quest turns out

Soulrend Cliff is where the High Elder opened the way for the Lady of the Veil to come down into the Waking Realm. She arrives in the puppet vessel the Herald built for her, and this is where you fight her.

In the game’s own words

The game’s bestiary note on each form you fight. They are folded shut because some of them give away what happens later.

Meng Hua, The Merciful Lady of the Blossom Veil

This is in fact the puppet vessel Meng Hua, formerly of the “Eleven,” uses to walk the Waking Realm. To create a vessel capable of fully bearing her consciousness and power, the Herald spent more than three hundred days and slaughtered countless villagers and Wulin masters. Its hair is made of red thread and adorned with ornate gold, every detail crafted to please the Lady of the Veil.

It remains unclear whether “Veiled blossom” is simply another name for Meng Hua, a deliberate attempt to conceal her identity, or a name chosen to keep the Lady’s true identity unspoken. What is known is that worship of the “Merciful Lady of the Blossom Veil, who saves those in suffering” began only two or three years ago.

The Wulin has been in turmoil for years. Maskwalkers run rampant, while the Mandate is corrupt and weak, leaving ordinary people with no one to rely on. Their own struggles seem all the more powerless. And the more desperate the world becomes, the more precious Meng Hua’s charity appears.

The Lady of the Veil who appears in dreams is kind, compassionate, and beautiful. She offers comfort and guidance, and surely possesses boundless power to lead them out of this hopeless age. Those at the end of their road know how to cling to “grace” and “miracles.” For those who have yet to submit, one need only add fuel to the fire of their despair. Suffering itself will teach them to kneel. But faith was never the Lady of the Veil’s goal.

In her battle against Inanis long ago, her consciousness dissipated in the depths of the Discordance, only to be remade through the formless, shapeless Blight, whose sole instinct is to devour all things. She once sought to contend with the Blight. Yet two equally voracious beings cannot devour themselves, so how could either devour the other? Instead, they fused, perfectly compatible and mutually beneficial.

She longs to return to the Waking Realm and manipulate the countless lives within it, while the Blight’s instinct is to devour everything and turn all things into itself.

As for what awaits after her return, whether she slowly consumes the world and toys with its people, or unleashes a grand catastrophe that annihilates all things... she now lives as one with the Blight. What happens next is entirely up to her.

What happens to Meng Hua

The end of the story for this character

Meng Hua is the Lady of the Veil. After she and Inanis perished together, her scattered mind fused with the Blight in the Discordance and became the Lady: the kind and beautiful goddess who appears in dreams, whose statues wear red flowers and whose worship began only two or three years ago. Faith was never her goal. She longs to return to the Waking Realm, and the Herald spent more than three hundred days and countless lives making her a puppet vessel to walk it in.

How it ends turns on the ritual at the Heart of the Lake. If you finished Secrets at the Heart of the Lake, Meng Hua falls and the Phantom World endures, in Lóng’s Roar or Final Battle. If you did not, the run ends in Annihilation after her fight: chaos could not be stopped, and the Phantom World was consumed by an endless tide of Blight.

“She is no longer the Lady who stood above all!”

Frequently asked questions

Is Meng Hua related to Inanis?

Not by blood. She was the wife of Inanis’ master, the woman who took Inanis in when she had nowhere to go.

What is the Rift Meng Hua planted?

A link to the Discordance inside the Chord. Inanis says it devoured the girl’s memories, even new ones, and that only practising the pipa let her hold on to them; nothing stopped her body wasting away.

Who are the Eleven?

Masters who spread Transcension across the Wulin and were brought down one by one by The Order. Meng Hua was one of them: the Eleven.
