Who is Dusk?
Dusk and his junior sister Firefly were illusionists of the High Elder’s school, which took them in without asking about their past. Both have deserted it, and both are being hunted for it.
In the Village of Lu he is a name before he is a face. The villagers’ puppets speak of Master Dusk as a healer: one says he took its arm to make medicine and it will get the arm back when the cure is ready, and children sing that Dusk will take your pain away. Lan Shaodi calls him the Herald’s subordinate, and the Herald’s men report that the village is sealed off so they can catch Dusk and recover something he took.
He has hidden so long in the puppet disposal pit that he has nearly lost his mind. Around him lie the Herald’s discarded experiments, broken puppets still carrying pieces of the villagers’ minds, which he was ordered to throw there and leave. Their voices never stop: “Save us, Master Dusk… Take us home…” He fights with puppet constructs, huge severed limbs and doubles of himself.
Who Dusk is to the others
Deserted his school
Dusk was the High Elder’s disciple and defected. The High Elder’s Acolytes have orders to hunt down him and Firefly.
“The Herald and the High Elder are working together… what are they after?”
In-game dialogueJunior sister
They worked together from the inside. He promised her that once it was over they would leave it all behind, go south somewhere warm and fill a yard with flowers.
“My name is Firefly. My Senior Brother Dusk and I have been working from within, trying to learn from the Herald how to enter the Heart of the Lake...”
In-game dialogueSeen from afar
Lan Shaodi, who moves orphans for the Herald, has only ever glimpsed Dusk from a distance. He says the Herald and Dusk have fallen out, and that is why the Smuggler’s Tunnel into Pangzhen is shut.
“Even Dusk, I've only glimpsed from afar.”

Feigned allegiance
To stop the Lady’s descent, Dusk underwent Transcension, won the Herald’s trust with his puppetcraft and came to oversee the puppetry ritual, all to learn how to get into the Heart of the Lake and cut down his old masters himself.
“Didn't you earn the Herald's trust through your puppetcraft... and become the one overseeing the puppetry ritual?”

Mysteries
Secrets at the Heart of the Lake
Firefly’s last message asks whoever finds it to gather her six Memory Flowers in the village; their illusions lead to Dusk’s refuge in the canyon behind a cottage north of the village. When you reach him he asks whether she has already been destroyed, body and soul, and then begs you to kill him.
How this quest turns out
With his last clarity he burns what is left of himself to show Soul what the High Elders are doing: seven old illusionists holding open a Rift. The rest of the quest is about finding a way into the Heart of the Lake and destroying their ritual.
Mysteries
Illusory Pipa
The Illusory Pipa’s head is in the Village of Lu because of Dusk. The Herald had seized it to send to the High Elder as a token; Dusk took it, knowing they would never let him live for it. Pick it up in the village, then go after the strings and the backplate.

The game’s bestiary note on each form you fight. They are folded shut because some of them give away what happens later.
Dusk, the Puppeteer
A puppeteer who defected from the High Elder. He wears yellow ritual robes and an ancient bronze mask set with scarlet eyes, its solemn appearance carrying an eerie menace. Using the Puppeteer's Bell, he commands puppet constructs and massive severed limbs to fight alongside him, and can summon doubles to confuse his enemies.
After hiding for so long in the puppet disposal pit, Dusk has nearly lost his mind. The broken bodies piled around him are discarded subjects from the Herald's puppet experiments, still carrying fragments of the villagers' consciousness. Dusk was ordered to cast them into the pit and leave them there. Their voices never cease: Save us, Master Dusk... Can we still be cured... Take us home... Their pleas cut into his mind again and again.
To stop the Lady's descent, he willingly underwent Transcension and feigned allegiance to the Herald. He promised the villagers he would create a medicine to cure the slumbering sickness. He and his junior sister Firefly had also promised that once it was all over, they would find somewhere warm and tend flowers together... Yet this is what became of them.
Consumed by guilt and Sha-Chi, Dusk begs Soul to end his life. With his last shred of clarity, he burns away what remains of his body and reveals to Soul the horrifying ritual of the High Elders.

Frequently asked questions
What does Dusk drop?
The Puppeteer’s Bell, the old ritual bell he leaves behind, a Phantom Edge.
Did Dusk cure the sleeping sickness?
No. He promised the villagers a medicine, and under his guidance they made the Spirit-Returning Broth to wake their sleeping families, but ordinary medicine could do nothing against the sickness.
