Phantom Blade Zero · PC
Phantom Blade Zero stuttering, crashes and low FPS on PC: what to fix first
On an NVIDIA card, go back to driver 617.42 with a clean installation, install the 5 GB day-one patch, and let the first-boot shader step finish before you judge the frame rate.

Each row is one thing you see on screen. Try the steps top to bottom and stop when it is fixed; where nobody has a fix yet, the row says so. A solid diamond is what S-GAME, Steam or NVIDIA say; a dashed diamond is what reviewers found on their own PCs.
Low or unstable frame rateAny NVIDIA card
- Check your driver. If it is 621.01 or newer than 617.42, roll back to 617.42 and choose the clean installation option.
- Install the day-one patch before you launch, if you pre-loaded.
- Turn High-Quality Hair off. It costs about a fifth of the frame rate, in gameplay as well as cutscenes.
Stutter in the first minutesFirst launch
- Let the shader step finish. The game compiles shaders on first boot; it took about 8 minutes on a Core i7-14700K. Once it is done, shader stutter is mostly gone.
- Keep the game on an SSD. Steam lists an SSD as required on every tier.
Frame rate drops with ray tracingRay tracing or path tracing on
- Install the day-one patch. S-GAME says it significantly improves ray tracing and path tracing performance.
- Turn ray tracing off from the main menu. It cannot be switched during play. With ray tracing on, one test lost about a third of its frame rate, and path tracing about 38 percent.
- Turn upscaling on. Steam’s own targets, 1080p at 30 fps and 1440p at 60 fps, assume it.
Hitches while movingBetween areas, mid-fight
- Expect a few. Reviewers found traversal stutter uncommon and rarely severe; ray tracing and path tracing can add short hitches.
- Check the drive. The game needs an SSD, not a hard disk.
Smearing with frame generationDLSS Frame Generation on
- Turn Motion Blur off. Reviewers traced most frame generation artefacts to it.
- If frame times get uneven, turn frame generation off. Reflex only comes on with it, and one test saw Reflex make frame times unsteady.
CrashesOn launch or to desktop
- Do the two official steps: driver 617.42 with a clean installation, then the day-one patch.
- Verify the game files in Steam. In your Library, open the game’s Properties, then Installed Files, and choose Verify integrity of game files. This is Steam’s general repair step, not a fix S-GAME has named.
- No crash fix is published yet. S-GAME has not listed known crashes. Wait for NVIDIA’s next driver, which S-GAME expects soon.

Which NVIDIA driver to use
Use 617.42. On 28 October S-GAME said it had seen performance instability with NVIDIA’s newest driver, 621.01, and that 617.42 gives the best experience in its own testing. If you have anything newer than 617.42, roll back to it and choose the clean installation option in NVIDIA’s installer.
Stay on 617.42 until NVIDIA releases its next driver. S-GAME expects that to arrive soon; NVIDIA has not given a date.
NVIDIA itself still calls 621.01 the Game Ready driver for the game, in its 20 October article on DLSS 4.5. The two advise opposite things, and we follow the studio that made the game. One review PC ran 621.01 without running into driver problems, so if your game is already smooth on it, you do not have to change.
On AMD, S-GAME has named no particular driver. Its pre-load note of 26 October asks every PC player to update to the latest graphics driver.
The day-one patch
The day-one patch is about 5 GB. S-GAME says it significantly improves ray tracing and path tracing performance and fixes several bugs; it has not published a list of what those bugs are.
If you pre-loaded the game, download and install the patch before you launch. If you did not pre-load, your download already includes it.
The whole game is about 145 GB on PC, and Steam says it needs an SSD. Our pre-load and download size page has the rest.
The settings that cost the most
| Setting | What it costs | Do this |
|---|---|---|
| High-Quality Hair | About 19 percent of the frame rate | Off |
| Ray tracing | About a third of the frame rate in one test; about 1.5 GB more video memory | Off unless you have the RTX 5060 S-GAME recommends for it |
| Path tracing | About 38 percent in the same test; nearly 3 GB more video memory | Off unless you have the RTX 5080 S-GAME recommends for it |
| Ultra presets | Very little over Very High, in looks or frame rate | Very High |
| Motion Blur | Causes most frame generation artefacts | Off with frame generation |
Pick an upscaler before anything else. DLSS, FSR, XeSS and Unreal’s own TSR are all in the menu, and Steam’s minimum and recommended targets assume upscaling is on. On an RTX card you also get DLSS 4.5 Multi Frame Generation; frame generation from AMD and Intel shows only on their own cards.
Video memory: with 8 GB you can keep environment textures on Ultra at 1440p without ray tracing. For ray tracing or path tracing, 10 to 12 GB or more is the safer amount.
The RTX 5060 and RTX 5080 lines are S-GAME’s own ray tracing and path tracing recommendations, at 1080p and 4K, both at 60 fps with upscaling. Every tier is on our PC requirements page.
Steam Deck and handhelds
Valve has not rated Phantom Blade Zero for Steam Deck: its compatibility report still returns no rating. S-GAME says it tested the game on mid-range and lower-end PCs and on handhelds, and encourages you to try it.
Reviewers who tried it on Steam Deck found it stuck under 30 fps even at the lowest settings, 23 to 27 fps in the Crimson Forest with dips near 10, and about two to two and a half hours of battery. For now, treat Steam Deck as a test, not the way to play.
Sound, controllers and screens
Controllers are fully supported on PC. Steam lists full controller support, DualShock and DualSense controllers and Steam Input, and recommends a gamepad. S-GAME says PC has more flexible button remapping than the three layouts on PS5.
Dolby Atmos is not confirmed in the released game. Only a report from The Game Awards in December 2025 says the game will support it; Steam lists stereo sound, and no review we have read mentions Atmos. The audio settings do let you change the tone of clashing blades.
The game is fitted to 16:9 monitors and TVs, 16:10 laptops and handhelds, and ultrawide screens wider than 3:1. HDR has its own switch in the game, separate from Windows HDR, with peak, mid and interface brightness sliders.
