Who is Soul?

Soul and Zuo Shang began as street orphans who wandered, stole and scraped by. In the game’s first flashback, twenty-three years back, the two boys kill a so-called grandmaster, the Ethereal Swordsman, who was robbing and killing even children, and in the same scene Mu Tianmiao tells them that in the Wulin, survival makes you the victor. He takes them into The Order and tells them to think of it as home. Soul remembers that life as harsh and lonely, with Mu’s daughter, Mu Xiaokui, the only light in it.

He was born with a restless Sha-Chi. Mu warned him that outside forces could stir it into madness, told him never to let anger consume him, and warned him above all about a strange bell from Soulrend Cliff whose ringing makes Sha-Chi swell. He grew into a Shadow Edict: his movement art, Phantom, makes him a spectre in a fight, his Blade art kills in a single stroke, and the blade he carries, Sanguine, was chosen for him by Mu himself.

When the game opens, Mu Tianmiao is dead, the Order says Soul killed him, and Zuo Shang sits in his place as Shadow Sovereign with orders to kill Soul on sight. In the prologue’s duel, Soul and Zuo Shang each drove a blade through the other’s heart. The Flesh Sculptor saved Soul with the Tainted Heart and told him of a Heart in Pangzhen that can remake flesh and raise the dead: Zuo Shang has gone after it to save himself, and if Soul brings it back, he can live beyond his sixty-six days.

So he follows the creek out of Weeping Creek Valley in Chapter 1, with Shadow Wardens and The Hunt on his heels, and on through the Crimson Forest, the Village of Lu and Pangzhen to the Mirage Estate and Mount Soulrend. The only one who dares help him is Inanis, through her bells and her three artisans; the eldest, Forge, sharpens his blades and makes the Sanguine Reach from Sanguine’s own materials. Old friends Lei Dang and Chang Hong now serve Zuo Shang, and Xiaokui wants an answer from him. He gives no one his reasons; as Chang Hong puts it, there is always something he can’t say, and in the end he carries it all himself.

Who Soul is to the others

  • Adoptive father

    Mu Tianmiao

The founder of The Order, whom Soul calls Shifu. Mu took him in as a boy, chose his blade, and warned him to keep his Sha-Chi calm and beware the Soulrend Cliff bell. The Order says Soul murdered him.

  • Sworn brother, now enemy

    Zuo Shang

His closest friend since the streets and Mu Tianmiao’s other adopted son. Their duel left a blade through each of their hearts, and Zuo Shang now leads the Order that hunts him.

  • Childhood friend

    Mu Xiaokui

Mu Tianmiao’s only daughter. As children he promised her he would never hold back when they sparred. She now sees him as her father’s killer, and he will not tell her what really happened.

  • The healer who saved him

    The Flesh Sculptor

After the duel he kept Soul’s pierced heart beating with the Tainted Heart, which leaves him sixty-six days. Lei Dang says only the Flesh Sculptor can perform it.

“Zuo Shang pierced it with one strike. The Flesh Sculptor used the Tainted Heart method to save me.”

    In-game dialogue
  • Former partner

    Lei Dang

They fought side by side in The Order. Lei Dang lost his right arm on a mission, and says that without Soul he would have lost his head. Now he serves Zuo Shang, but when they meet at Jingyang Hall he will not fight him yet.

“If not for you, it wouldn't have been just my arm. I'd have lost my head.”

    In-game dialogue
  • Old friend

    Chang Hong

A spearman of The Order who has faced death beside Soul many times. When they meet now, they fight, and Soul suspects it was a test.

  • Fellow Shadow Edict

    Inanis

The Order’s master of Phantom Arts, who no longer has a body. From beyond she helps him: the bells that heal him, the Memory Flowers, and the Realm of Mirage, the one place Zuo Shang’s people cannot find.

“Hm... Not much to look at... For someone who once stood alongside Lady Inanis as a Shadow Edict.”

  • Father, all but named

    Mó Yuan

The man in the gold mask in the Lóng Pillars. His bestiary says he missed Soul’s first words and first steps in more than thirty years apart, he tells Soul he has carried him in his thoughts all these years, and at their last meeting Soul is all but certain, yet cannot ask the one question that matters. The game never says it outright.

“I know it now... in my blood. He was—”

Every quest with Soul in it

  1. Story

    Against the Flow

The opening stretch, in Weeping Creek Valley. Soul follows the creek toward Pangzhen, where he hopes to pick up Zuo Shang’s trail: through the Mandate’s outpost, past Peng Meng and his Dread Axe, and on along Yu’er’s directions to the Great Waterfall, where The Hunt, the Shadow Warden sent to kill him, has called a final showdown. His chains are the way up through the cave behind the falls.

  2. Story

    Steel and Steam

Inside the Steel Tower in Weeping Creek Valley. Find the key a panicked disciple dropped on the top floor, open the camp’s outer gate for him, and settle the score with The Hunt.

  3. Story

    Heartless Remnants

Chapter 3, Village of Lu. With the highway bridge down, Soul looks for the Smuggler’s Tunnel into Pangzhen. He frees the minds of three Mandate masters bound by red puppet threads, goes down the village well, and opens Puppet No. 44 with the eyeball Mu Xiaokui gives him. At the Lakeside bell she fights him for the truth about her father.

    How this quest turns out

He still will not tell her. She works it out far enough herself: the one who killed her father was him, and yet not him.

  4. Story

    Town of Death

Chapter 4, Pangzhen. Soul pushes into the silent town, finds a way into the backstreets, calls at Yu’er’s home, and visits his old friend Lei Dang at Jingyang Hall. By the Order’s rules Lei Dang should kill him; instead he tells Soul that the Heart is being made in the Mirage Estate, that Zuo Shang has a pact with the Herald who is making it, and that Soul will have to find his own way in.

  5. Story

    The Heart’s Trail

Still in Pangzhen. Brambles block the way, so Soul takes the extinguished Flaming Mane from the Lion Dance Grandmaster and brings it to Lei Dang, a master of firearms, to get it burning again.

  6. Story

    The Four Serpent Houses

The Herald has packed the Mirage Estate’s front gate with guards to “receive” Lei Dang, so Soul looks for another way in through the Serpent Houses, where the Order prepares its medicines. Search the Green Serpent House for clues, find the Serpent Eye, Tongue and Fang, and open the White Serpent House with the Loong Emblem.

  7. Story

    The Way Forward

The Vessel, the Radiant Heart, the Order’s plot: every thread leads into the Herald’s Mirage Estate. Soul opens the secret door in the Green Serpent House and goes in, where an Opera Ticket opens the Opera House.

    How this quest turns out

What he finds there leaves him sure that the Radiant Heart, the Vessel and the Rift that would bring the Lady into the Waking Realm must not exist. From the Mourning Hall, a passage leads on toward Mount Soulrend.

  8. Story

    Soulrend Cliff

The last story quest, on Mount Soulrend. Soul blasts through the sealed stone wall with the Tiger Cannon and climbs the snowbound mountain to Soulrend Cliff, where the High Elder opened the way for the Lady to descend, to settle everything before his life runs out.

    How this quest turns out

At the top he faces Leng Tu, Herald of the Veil, then the Lady, and then, if you have finished Secrets at the Heart of the Lake, Zuo Shang for the last time.

What happens to Soul

The end of the story for this character

The game shows what really happened in flashbacks. Three years before the game, Uncle Zhong gave Zuo Shang a map to Mu Tianmiao’s secret retreat and told him what Mu did there: to master a sword art taken from the Lóng Clan, he rang the bell from Soulrend Cliff to drive his own Sha-Chi to the brink, wearing Mó Yuan’s golden mask to keep from breaking. Three months before the game, Zuo Shang handed Soul that map, saying Mu had left it for him and that it marked a place tied to his bloodline. The bell set Soul’s Sha-Chi raging, and he killed the man who raised him. Zuo Shang had planned it the other way round: Mu would kill Soul and be badly wounded, and Zuo Shang would strike the final blow.

Soul knew from that night that it was all Zuo Shang’s plan. He kept it from Xiaokui because, if she knew, she would rush at Zuo Shang, and Zuo Shang would never spare her.

His bloodline is the other half of the story. In the five Lóng Pillar trials, Mó Yuan of the Bastion of Mó teaches him the Bastion’s way of Phantom and Blade. Everything points to Mó Yuan being his father, though the game never says it outright, and the Bastion of Mó Mask, which Soul Tempers Sanguine into Infernal Rouge, is described as proof of his bloodline. Zuo Shang, for his part, wants to know which is stronger: Lóng or Mó.

On Mount Soulrend Soul faces Leng Tu and then the Lady herself, Meng Hua. What follows depends on two Mysteries. Without Secrets at the Heart of the Lake, the story ends after the Lady falls, in Annihilation: chaos is not stopped, and the Phantom World is consumed by an endless tide of Blight. With it, Soul goes on to face Zuo Shang one last time. If Bloodline Awakening is not done, that ends in Lóng’s Roar: the Phantom World endures, but the Radiant Heart is lost and his life still hangs in the balance. With both, it ends in Final Battle: the truth uncovered and the Heart found.

If he comes away holding the Radiant Heart, Inanis tells him the Flesh Sculptor could set it in his chest in place of his failing heart: decades more of life, and Sha-Chi and skill no one could match, though that too would be a kind of Transcension. Soul asks himself whether, having found his heart, he must now surrender it. Inanis’s last word to him is a question: what path will he choose?

The 66 Days difficulty has a fourth ending. If he dies with no days left, he has failed to find the truth and the Heart in time, and the ending is Undying Grudge; it is Zuo Shang who speaks over his body. Every ending in full: Endings guide.

“but in sixty-six days, it will claim your life.”
