Mó Yuan

Mó Yuan is the last leader of the Bastion of Mó, the clan The Order and the Lóng Clan destroyed more than thirty years ago. You meet him as the man in the gold mask inside the Lóng Pillars: touch one and he puts Soul through a trial, holding back every strike to teach, five times over the game.

Who is Mó Yuan?

In Mó Yuan’s telling, the Lóng Clan wanted to rule the Wulin and branded any sect that would not kneel as heretics, then rallied the Wulin to wipe them out, women and children alike. The Bastion’s forebears stood up for those small sects and so became the greatest “evil” in the Lóng Clan’s eyes. They never killed in secret: every target first received a Mó Notice naming the day.

He once crossed blades with Lóng Mingyu, the Lóng Clan’s finest, with Sha-Chi so thick that ordinary fighters nearby would have choked on it, and Mu Tianmiao simply walked in and politely asked them to stop. From that moment he knew Mu was no ordinary man. Not long after, the Order and the Lóng Clan stormed the Bastion of Mó together. Soul says Mu admired Mó Yuan more than anyone; Mó Yuan has nothing good to say about Mu.

You meet him through the Lóng Pillars, which the Lóng Clan built to seal what their arrogance had stirred in the Discordance, and which, he says, broke the balance between the worlds. Touch one and Soul falls into burning ruins where a man in black waits with a red blade. Over the trials he teaches the Bastion’s way, Phantom and Blade, shows Soul the Bastion’s heirloom Infernal Rouge, calls Soul’s Sanguine a mere replica, and offers a method that could bring back the Sha-Chi Soul lost with his wound. He says he is trapped, thanks to the Order and Mu Tianmiao.

Who Mó Yuan is to the others

  • Old enemy

    Mu Tianmiao

Mu’s Order and the Lóng Clan destroyed the Bastion of Mó, and Mó Yuan blames his imprisonment on the Order and Mu Tianmiao.

“I'm trapped here thanks to your Order... and Mu Tianmiao’s schemes.”

  • Father, all but named

    Soul

His bestiary says five meetings could never make up for more than thirty years apart: he never heard Soul’s first words or saw his first steps. He tells Soul he has carried him in his thoughts all these years, and Soul, all but certain, cannot bring himself to ask. The game never says it outright.

“I've carried you in my thoughts all these years.”

Every quest with Mó Yuan in it

  1. Mysteries

    Bloodline Awakening

Touch the first Lóng Pillar in Weeping Creek Valley and you hear battle and see fire; Soul feels it echo the burning power that tore out of him in his youth duel with Zuo Shang. Find all five pillars and clear each trial with the man in black. Finishing them earns Phantom and Blade, and it is one of the two quests that decide how the story ends.

    How this quest turns out

At the fifth pillar he tells Soul this may be their final meeting, that he is not dead but locked away where no one can reach, and that Soul must not come looking.

  2. Collectibles

    Lóng Pillars

The collectible side of the same search: find and touch the Lóng Pillars hidden across the land. Each pillar is another trial with Mó Yuan.

In the game’s own words

The game’s bestiary note on each form you fight. They are folded shut because some of them give away what happens later.

The Gold-Masked One

Through the Lóng Pillar, Soul falls into a place where fire and darkness intertwine. The ruins of pavilions burn endlessly in the darkness, as though a disaster has been frozen at its most brutal moment. Amid the scorched earth, a man in black wearing a golden mask slowly appears, his steps calm and his bearing that of a master. Something about it all feels strangely familiar to Soul.

The man in black wields an ornate, vivid red blade. His strikes are precise and seasoned, his movements graceful as a shadow. Whenever Soul’s blade draws near, he slips aside in an instant, leaving the attack to fall short. If he meant to win, he would be a formidable opponent, yet he holds back with every strike, deliberately using the battle to guide Soul’s martial arts.

Few in the world possess such martial mastery. After the trial, the man in black tells Soul to remember the name “Bastion of Mó.” Clearly, this mysterious master is from the Bastion of Mó... Could he be Mó Yuan, leader of the Bastion of Mó?

Could the other Lóng Pillars lead Soul to him again and reveal more answers?

In-game bestiary
Mó Yuan, Leader of the Bastion of Mó

Five Lóng Pillars, five reunions, yet they could never make up for more than thirty years apart. Across those countless days and nights, he missed too many important moments in Soul’s life.

He never heard Soul’s first words or watched him take his first steps. He was not there to teach him to read, introduce him to martial arts, or personally pass down the Bastion of Mó’s techniques. The Bastion bloodline carries immense Sha-Chi, demanding exceptional strength and control. Without someone from the Bastion to guide him, Soul was bound to endure far more hardship...

Fortunately, Soul has grown up safe. He now stands tall, and his martial skill is already no less than Mó Yuan’s own. In every move, Mó Yuan sees the hardship of those thirty years, as well as Soul’s search and uncertainty today. Soul is walking his own path. Beyond guiding his martial arts and teaching him to master the power in his blood, all Mó Yuan can do is let him know that someone will always be there for him.

But saying everything in his heart might only become a burden. Better to leave all the words he cannot say within each exchange of blades. He can only hope that these trials will help Soul clear the path ahead.

What happens to Mó Yuan

The end of the story for this character

Mó Yuan is still alive. When Soul says that with his wounded heart he may soon drift through the Discordance to find him, Mó Yuan laughs: he is not dead yet. Mu Tianmiao locked him away somewhere no one can reach, and Soul should not waste time looking but finish what he must. His last lesson: no matter how many days remain, live each one true to your heart.

The Bastion of Mó Mask, which Soul Tempers Sanguine into Infernal Rouge, is described as proof of Soul’s bloodline.

“Hahaha! I'm not dead yet.”
