Who is Yan Qiansui?
Yan’er was the Meigu Songhouse’s great zither player. On the day she played Allure of Vanity, the house was packed. She believed she had found true love with a great man from a righteous sect, who said he would take her away and make her his wife.
Now the songhouse is a ruin and no one dares go near it. People on the lake hear the zither and say how eerie it sounds. Her instrument seems almost alive, pouring out her resentment over anyone who strays there.
You meet her in Chapter 7. Memory Flowers drift over Meigu Lake and a mournful song carries across the water; collect them and the mist parts on the island of the old songhouse.

Took her in, took her child
When she came out of the lake, the High Elder took her into his sect, gave her the name Yan Qiansui and the Illusory Pipa’s strings. What he wanted was the child she carried: a Mandate leader’s child, an offering that cut the time to open his passage from sixty years to three.
“The child of a Mandate's elite, carried in the womb of a most promising woman from that theatre.”
In-game dialogueHer child’s father
Sect Leader Ming of the Ming Sword Sect, who came to all her performances. When she was pregnant he paid an assassin in gold to do it cleanly: the heir of the Ming Sword Sect, he said, could never come from a place like that.
“Master Ming sent him... to kill me?”
In-game dialogueSaw her banished
The Herald was with the High Elder when he banished her, and asked why he spared her life. Killing her, the High Elder said, might disturb the offering.
“High Elder, why spare her life only to banish her?”

Mysteries
Allure of Vanity
Collect all the Memory Flowers on Meigu Lake, then find Yan Qiansui on the island where the Meigu Songhouse stood, the source of the singing.
How this quest turns out
The flowers are Yan’er’s memories: the day Xi Niang guesses she is pregnant by Sect Leader Ming, the assassin he pays, her leap into the lake, and the High Elder who takes her in and renames her.
Mysteries
Illusory Pipa
Bai Chilian’s notes say the Illusory Pipa’s strings have something to do with Meigu Lake and a singing voice. That trail leads to Yan Qiansui’s songhouse.
How this quest turns out
After you beat her, her zither shimmers: she had strung it with the Illusory Pipa’s strings the High Elder gave her. Take them to Myst in Pangzhen with the other two pieces.

Yan Qiansui, the Zither Maiden
A woman who wanders before a ruined songhouse, playing the zither in her arms day and night without rest. The instrument seems almost alive, its ringing notes giving voice to her pent-up resentment and indignation, spilling them over any living thing that strays here.
Yan’er was once a renowned zither player who captivated every audience. She thought she had found true love with a great hero and even bore his child, only to be met with an assassin’s blade... In the debauched life of that Mandate sect leader, there was never any place for the happiness a lowly musician could hope for.
After narrowly surviving the calamity, Yan’er was taken in by the High Elder and given the name Yan Qiansui. But what the High Elder truly wanted was the child in her womb. To him, her unborn child was merely a sacrifice to shorten the passage. When Yan Qiansui learned the truth behind her child’s death, she was alive in body but dead inside. Yet it seemed all she could do was flee from the truth.
Only the zither that had always remained by her side could offer her a little comfort, allowing her to lose herself in a fleeting dream of past splendor and seek a salvation that never existed.
What happens to Yan Qiansui
The end of the story for this character
Sect Leader Ming’s assassin found her at the songhouse. She told Xi Niang to take care of herself and leapt into the lake; the assassin reported that, with a child in her belly, she could not survive it. She did. The High Elder took her in, named her Yan Qiansui, and told her that her child was gone as if it had never existed, perhaps resting now under the Lady’s grace.
In truth her unborn child was the offering he needed. When she learned it, she was alive in body but dead inside. The High Elder banished her rather than kill her, for fear of disturbing the offering, and she has wandered the ruined songhouse ever since, losing herself in a dream of past splendour. Soul beats her there, and the strings on her zither go into the Illusory Pipa.
“Let her be. Killing her could disturb the offering. The pure soul must remain untouched, or The Lady will be displeased.”
