Who is Huangxing?

Yuyin, Huangxing and Moji of the Kunlun Sect are known together as the Three Pillars of Kunlun. The Mandate sent them to this region after the Maskwalker uprising to rally the smaller sects and finish off the Maskwalkers. They were evenly matched, but each had a different temper: Yuyin fierce, Moji gentle, Huangxing quiet and reserved. Moji is also his younger brother, and Moji’s men say the two are nothing alike.

You hear about him from Chapter 1 on: the Pillars of Kunlun book in Weeping Creek Valley, letters in the Crimson Forest, and finally the Mandate Encampment in Chapter 5. There the letters and Moji’s journal tell how it went. Yuyin went missing, a mysterious “Master Bai” began to meet Huangxing in secret, and Huangxing ordered Perfect Transcension in the camp. Those who refused it were branded traitors and killed, and his own letter tells the Wulin that Moji fled the fight like a coward.

His Memory Flowers on the Mountain of Imprisonment show where he started: a commander holding a line nobody would reinforce, who said Transcension should never have existed. His people hold the way up to him. Wan Jun guards the Encampment gate, Bi Feng the Commander’s Platform, and the Maskwalker Jade-Face shadows Soul all the way up the mountain on his orders. He waits at the summit in the Lu family’s old ancestral hall, now The Lady’s Shrine.

Who Huangxing is to the others

  • Elite swordsman

    Bi Feng

One of his elite. Years of watching the Mandate’s leaders starve the front line had worn Bi Feng down, and Huangxing’s iron hand gave him hope again. He holds the Commander’s Platform on the Mountain of Imprisonment.

  • Follower

    Wan Jun

A giant feared for his strength and mocked as slow-witted, until Huangxing scolded him for wasting his strength on pigeons and taught him Perfect Transcension, promising it had no cost. Wan Jun has guarded the Encampment gate on his orders ever since.

  • Sent to watch Soul

    Jade-Face (Jade Mask)

A Maskwalker Huangxing sent to watch Soul’s movements. He taunts Soul all the way up the mountain and seems to enjoy it, nothing like Huangxing’s other men.

4 more ties the story reveals later
  • Senior sister he betrayed

    Yuyin

Yuyin was the eldest of the three. Huangxing and Zuo Shang plotted to have her killed during the joint operation with The Order. When Zuo Shang offers to make her disappear, Huangxing answers that whatever happens to her has nothing to do with him.

“The Three Pillars of Kunlun—Yuyin, Huangxing, and Moji.”

    In-game dialogue
  • Younger brother

    Moji

His brother and fellow Pillar, who opposed Perfect Transcension to the end. When they finally fought, Huangxing did not kill him: he sealed part of Moji inside the clay statue in his shrine, to prove himself right and make Moji watch the new Wulin he would build.

    “Master Moji... his own brother.”

    In-game dialogue
  • Fellow plotter

    Zuo Shang

The “Master Bai” who visited the camp is Zuo Shang. He tells Huangxing the Mandate has given up on the region, offers to make Yuyin disappear, and asks him in return to take the Chord and deliver her where Zuo Shang says.

“They took her and made her the Herald’s “Vessel Zero”… a prototype for their experiments.”

    In-game dialogue
  • Captured her

    The Chord

During the joint operation Huangxing badly wounded the Chord and handed her to the Herald, Leng Tu. She is held beneath his shrine.

“He also captured the Chord... and imprisoned her beneath the shrine...”

    In-game dialogue

Every quest with Huangxing in it

  1. Mysteries

    Pillars of Kunlun

The Mystery of the three Pillars, from Chapter 1 to Chapter 6. It starts at the Valley Sha-Chi Tower in Weeping Creek Valley, once an outpost of their men, and leads into the Mandate Encampment, where Huangxing pushed Perfect Transcension. Moji’s journal and map there point north, and on the Mountain of Imprisonment you climb to the shrine to confront him.

    How this quest turns out

After the fight, Moji speaks from inside the shrine’s clay statue: Huangxing and Zuo Shang killed Yuyin, and the Chord is imprisoned beneath the shrine. Use Huangxing’s Flying Guillotine to turn the switch at the base of the Lady’s statue.

  2. Collectibles

    Justice Tarnished

Six Memory Flowers on Huangxing, found on the Mountain of Imprisonment: I. Defend. Defend. Defend., II. The Last Pillar, III. Different Paths, IV. How to Defeat Them?, V. Zhu Xie and VI. A New Path Forward. They follow him from “This Transcension should never have existed” through a Mandate that will not send help, the Nine Elders punishing the Pillars and giving them three months, and his old friend Zhu Xie hunted as a traitor.

    How this quest turns out

The last flower is the day a disciple tells him there has been no word from Yuyin, and asks whether the Master Bai who visited found them a way through. Huangxing says she is not coming back, and laughs.

  3. Mysteries

    Whence the Weeping

Whence the Weeping starts in Chapter 1 with weeping carried on illusion magic, and it points to the northern mountains. It ends in Huangxing’s shrine: once he is beaten, his Flying Guillotine opens a dark way down beneath the statue.

    How this quest turns out

The weeping is the Chord’s. Huangxing captured her in the joint operation, and she has been held beneath the shrine ever since.

  4. Tales

    Hero’s Lament

Liu Yi, one of Moji’s men, is dying in a cage on the cliffs of the Mountain of Imprisonment. To him Huangxing is “neither man nor monster”. He asks you to bring back anything of Moji’s you find on the mountain; Moji’s Bloodstained Sword is in the cave where the Maskwalkers keep their prisoners.

    How this quest turns out

Liu Yi gives his own blood to cleanse the blade, and the sword you pull out becomes the Ink Cut Phantom Edge. His last words: take this sword and kill Huangxing.

What happens to Huangxing

The end of the story for this character

Soul beats him in The Lady’s Shrine. In his second form, the Whirling Executioner, a ghost-faced saw wheel bursts from his body and merges with the Flying Guillotine, and the bestiary says he seems to have cast aside the last of his humanity. When it is over, Moji, sealed in the statue, says he never thought anyone could defeat him.

“I didn't think... you'd be able to defeat him.”
