Who is The Hunt?

The Order never lets a traitor escape, and The Hunt never lets his prey escape. Of all the killers it sends after its own, he is the most bloodthirsty and the least sane: he races and swings across sheer cliffs on his chains, and the harder his prey fights to live, the more he enjoys it.

When the game opens, The Order holds Soul guilty of killing the Shadow Sovereign, and The Hunt is sent after him. He catches up with Soul on the main road to Pangzhen in the Prologue (“By the Order’s rules… DIE!”) and does not die there. In Chapter 1 he stays one step ahead of Soul up Weeping Creek Valley, cutting down Mandate fighters as he goes and calling back for Soul to hurry: “Meet me at the falls. We’ll settle this there!”

He has been through Transcension too. In the Steel Tower, when his body is torn open, two steel arms unfold from his back and take up a second pair of chained sickles: this is The Hunt, Sixfold Scythe. The bestiary calls Shadow Wardens changed like this monsters who stay faithful to the new Shadow Sovereign, however grotesque the changes.

Who The Hunt is to the others

  • Answers to

    Zuo Shang

Zuo Shang, the new Shadow Sovereign of The Order. Transcension has not loosened The Hunt’s loyalty: he still carries out the new Shadow Sovereign’s orders to the letter.

  • His prey

    Soul

The traitor he is sent to kill. He calls him Master Soul, mocks him for pitying the Mandate dead, and finds him more trouble, and more of a thrill, than any prey before him.

“Heheh... so even the cold-blooded, merciless Master Soul can still feel compassion?”

In the game’s own words

The game’s bestiary note on each form you fight. They are folded shut because some of them give away what happens later.

The Hunt, Hunter of the Order

Among the killers tasked with hunting down traitors, The Hunt is by far the most bloodthirsty and unhinged. Armed with a pair of chained sickles, he races and swings across sheer cliffs with terrifying speed, pursuing his prey like a shadow. At close range, he bears down with vicious sickle strikes, each aimed to kill, or uses the chains to pull himself into the air and evade incoming attacks. At range, he lashes out with the chains to keep his foes in check, making his attacks nearly impossible to anticipate.

The Order never lets its traitors escape, and The Hunt never lets his prey escape. He has no desire for fame or fortune. The thrill of the kill is all the reward he needs.

Those who struggle hardest to survive often make the most worthwhile prey.

In-game bestiary
The Hunt, Sixfold Scythe

His flesh and armor lie torn open, yet his ruined body does not fall. Through the bloody mist, two steel arms unfold from the Hunt's back and grasp another pair of gleaming chain sickles. His four arms strike in turn or send all four scythes flying at once, extending and recoiling without pattern. Their pull can shake the earth and raise blasts of force. Even in retreat, he can strike back to kill.

Such is the extraordinary result of Transcension applied to the Order's Shadow Wardens: monsters that remain faithful to the new Shadow Sovereign, however grotesque their alterations.

The Hunt does not notice the ceaseless demand for slaughter screaming through his mind. Butchering Maskwalkers and Mandate fighters brings no satisfaction... He blames his quarry. This Master Soul is more troublesome than any before him, and must surely offer greater pleasure in the hunt. Yet is the hunter himself not prey to his own desires?

What happens to The Hunt

The end of the story for this character

Soul beats him in the Steel Tower and walks away with his chained sickles. Whether The Hunt dies there the game never says outright: the Hunter’s Chain Sickle is described only as a pair of chained sickles once wielded by the Hunt.

His chase leaves at least one body behind. On a cliff across a ravine in the valley lies a corpse dressed like Gu Lingran, the Mandate officer who fled when the Axemaster broke free, with The Hunt’s wounds in its back.

“Meet me at the falls. We'll settle this there!”

Frequently asked questions

Why is The Hunt after Soul?

The Order holds Soul guilty of killing the Shadow Sovereign, his adoptive father, and by The Order’s rules a traitor dies. Hunting its traitors is The Hunt’s whole job.

Why does The Hunt have four arms?

Transcension. When his body is torn open in the Steel Tower, two steel arms unfold from his back and grab a second pair of sickles. That form is The Hunt, Sixfold Scythe.

What does the Hunter’s Chain Sickle do outside a fight?

It latches onto special anchor points and pulls Soul up, even when it is not equipped. It is how you climb through the cave behind the Great Waterfall.
