Phantom Blade Zero · Character
Seven-Star Chief Disciple
The Chief Disciple leads the Seven-Stars Formation, seven Mandate swordsmen who fight as one in the shape of the Northern Dipper. No one knows his real name. His swordsmanship outstripped any division leader’s, yet he was never promoted because he loved a woman from an evil sect; you face him and his six juniors in Chapter 5.

Who is Seven-Star Chief Disciple?
The seven swordsmen of the Seven-Stars Formation prided themselves on their integrity: they punished evil, upheld justice, honed their swordsmanship and never sought to compete with anyone. Their leader is known only as the Chief Disciple. The camp ranks by robe colour, and the Wolf Leader in Pangzhen remembers him as a Blue Robe whose skill surpassed any division leader’s, held back because he got entangled with a woman from an evil sect. He did not mind; he would rather work on sword formations with his juniors.
Then something was done to that woman, and his juniors, who never blamed him, lost the last of their respect for the Mandate’s leaders. Their Memory Flowers show the seven deciding on Perfect Transcension. He knows it is Master Bai’s scheme to control the Mandate, and takes it anyway: not to serve anyone better, but so that they no longer serve anyone. The Mandate used it as the excuse to expel them.
A disciple outside points you to them: past the dovecotes and the cliffside walkway, at the three burning watchtowers. The seven still move as one, but their faces are black hollows now.
Who Seven-Star Chief Disciple is to the others
Second of the seven
In his Memory Flower the second disciple asks whether the seven should undergo Perfect Transcension, hoping it could win them their revenge, and wonders whether it is really any different from Transcension.
“Should we undergo Perfect Transcension?”

3 more ties the story reveals later
The woman he loves
Red, the swordswoman atop the Dovecote. The Mandate’s leaders tore them apart, and he could only watch as she was tortured; his peerless formation could not protect her. She comes back to fight beside him to the end.
“She's determined to die together with the Chief Disciple...”
In-game dialogueHis master, it seems
The grandmaster who tortured Red accuses her of seducing “my prodigy” and turning him against his sect. The game never names the Chief Disciple there, but he is the one who defied his sect for her.
“You seduced my prodigy and turned him against me... this is sin of the worst kind!”
In-game dialogueBehind the scheme
The Chief Disciple calls Perfect Transcension Master Bai’s scheme to control the Mandate, and Soul later realises Master Bai is Zuo Shang. The seven took it anyway, so that they would answer to no one.
“Master Bai... of course... it's Zuo Shang.”

Tales
The Undying Heroic Spirit
In Pangzhen the Wolf Leader at the Order’s Tavern will not say much about the Blue Robe who was never promoted. Meet the Chief Disciple in the Mandate Encampment and go back: the Wolf Leader gives you the jade Hero’s Courage and asks you to give peace to the Purple Leaders forced into Perfect Transcension by Huangxing’s people.
How this quest turns out
Soul tells the Wolf Leader he gave the seven of the formation an honourable end.
Tales
Daughter of the Dark Sect
Daughter of the Dark Sect is about the swordswoman in red on top of the Dovecote tower, and a dazed disciple at the dovecote door who keeps coming back to the Chief Disciple.
How this quest turns out
The Daughter of the Dark Sect is Red, the woman he loves, and she is determined to die together with him.
In the game’s own words
The game’s bestiary note on each form you fight. They are folded shut because some of them give away what happens later.
Chief Disciple of the Seven-Stars Formation
With the Chief Disciple at their head, the seven wield their swords as one, arrayed in the shape of the Northern Dipper, hence the name Seven-Star Formation. After Perfect Transcension, they became bound by Sha-Chi, their movements in attack and retreat perfectly synchronized.
These seven prided themselves on their integrity, devoted to punishing evil, upholding justice, and honing their swordsmanship, never seeking to contend with others. Yet the Chief Disciple fell in love with a woman from an evil sect, violating the Mandate’s rules. Though his swordsmanship was peerless and his many achievements had long made amends, the alliance still refused to promote him and repeatedly marginalized him. He merely laughed it off and bore every injustice.
He would not betray the woman he loved or his sect. Between the irreconcilable paths of "righteousness" and "evil," he sought a path he could follow with a clear conscience. Yet he often felt he owed too much to the junior disciples who had followed him all these years.
They never blamed their senior brother, instead burning with indignation over the injustices he suffered. Then that incident... shattered their last respect for the alliance’s upper ranks. They realized that meekly yielding only made them pawns to be used and trampled at will.
Consumed by resentment, they underwent Perfect Transcension. The alliance used this to expel them, making them even less known in the Wulin, especially their Chief Disciple, the foremost swordsman who led the formation.
Chief Disciple, Sword of Despair
On the high platform, three disciples catch a red thread on their sword tips and draw the Chief Disciple up with it, leaving him hanging upside down in midair. Pulled by the strings, he swings the blade in his hands, like a puppet trying to break free of its strings; like a wraith, he sprays countless razor-sharp red threads from the black hollows of his face, winding and slicing through the air like tears of blood.
He once loved a woman from an evil sect. The Mandate’s upper ranks would not tolerate their love, and with a single order, they tore the lovers apart. The Chief Disciple had known little beyond the sword formation. What did he know of schemes and intrigue? For the first time in his life, he clumsily defied his sect. In return, he could only watch helplessly as the woman he loved was tortured and left covered in wounds. Even his peerless sword formation could not protect the one he wanted to protect.
Once his heart was broken, there was little left he feared losing. He entrusted everything he had left to the strings.
And what if he looked like a puppet hanging upside down? At least the strings of that puppet would be held in their own hands.
What happens to Seven-Star Chief Disciple
The end of the story for this character
All seven fall to Soul, who later tells the Wolf Leader he gave them an honourable end. In the final battle the Chief Disciple appears as a vision: all his life he failed the one he loved and his brothers, he says, and he fought back too late. His juniors laugh that all eight of them go together, Red included.
“I gave those seven an honorable end...”

Frequently asked questions
What is the Chief Disciple’s real name?
The game never gives one. A disciple in the camp says no one knows it; they only call him the Chief Disciple.
What does Blue Robe mean?
Rank in the Mandate’s camp goes by robe colour: ordinary disciples wear white, captains blue, and division leaders such as the Wolf Leader purple. The Chief Disciple was kept a Blue Robe.
