Who is Red?

You meet Red at the top of the Dovecote tower in the Mandate Encampment in Chapter 5. Her swordplay is light and graceful, but Sha-Chi has already burned her face into a twisted hollow. A thread of reason remains in her: she stays on the tower as if waiting for someone important, and she has no intention of giving the fight with Soul her all. Sha-Chi drives her on anyway.

At the dovecote door a dazed Mandate swordswoman talks about her: a woman from an evil sect, the Daughter of the Dark Sect, whom the Mandate let live and who has since undergone Transcension herself. “She came back,” the disciple says, “even after what she became.”

A memory of hers shows her as the Mandate’s prisoner. Her sect kept to itself, she tells the grandmasters, so why wipe it out? Transcension has already spread across the Wulin; their true enemies are those inhuman monsters, and rot within is worse than any threat from without.

Who Red is to the others

3 more ties the story reveals later
  • The man she loves

    Seven-Star Chief Disciple

The Chief Disciple of the Seven-Stars Formation. She came from an evil sect and he from the Mandate, and the Mandate’s leaders used their love as an excuse to persecute her. When you face his formation she comes back to fight beside him: “Nothing can separate us. Not even in death.”

“We love each other. I regret nothing!”

    In-game dialogue
  • Her torturer

    Male Mandate Grandmaster

He accuses her of seducing his prodigy and turning him against his sect, and orders her scalded with boiling water and thrown into a pit.

“You seduced my prodigy and turned him against me... this is sin of the worst kind!”

    In-game dialogue
  • Ruined her face

    Female Mandate Grandmaster

She orders Red’s face sliced to ribbons, then laughs: let’s see how she seduces the Mandate’s disciples now.

“Come! Slice that pretty face to ribbons!”

Every quest with Red in it

  1. Tales

    Daughter of the Dark Sect

The quest starts when you meet Red on top of the Dovecote tower, and asks whether she will appear again. A dazed swordswoman at the dovecote door speaks of a Daughter of the Dark Sect; finding out who that is finishes it.

    How this quest turns out

The disciple says the Daughter of the Dark Sect is determined to die together with the Chief Disciple. Red is the woman he loved, and she returns when you face the Seven-Stars Formation.

In the game’s own words

The game’s bestiary note on each form you fight. They are folded shut because some of them give away what happens later.

Red, the Mysterious Swordswoman

A mysterious woman in red who once appeared atop the Dovecote tower. Her swordplay is light and graceful, yet Sha-Chi has already burned her face into a twisted hollow. A thread of reason remains. She stays atop the tower as if waiting for someone important. Thus, when she fought Soul, she had no intention of giving it her all. Driven by Sha-Chi, she could barely control herself.

She came from an evil sect, yet fell in love with the Chief Disciple of a Mandate sect. The Mandate's upper ranks could never tolerate the sect she came from, and their love became an excuse to persecute her. They subjected her to humiliation after humiliation, then hypocritically spared her life.

How absurd. Those same leaders had no desire to stand against inhuman creatures, yet were willing to go to great lengths to deal with a small sect living in seclusion. They proclaimed themselves the righteous path, yet possessed not a fraction of the courage and integrity of the disciples beneath them.

To survive, and to seek revenge, she underwent Transcension. But as she stands atop the tower, looking down upon the ruined Mandate Encampment, does she wonder if it was all for nothing? Or perhaps, when it comes to the love and hatred of her life, she has no regrets.

What happens to Red

The end of the story for this character

When you face the Seven-Stars Formation, Red comes back to fight beside the Chief Disciple. The game never shows her death outright, but in the final battle she appears as a vision with him and his juniors, and thanks Soul for letting the two of them face the end together.

“I shall be waiting for you...”
