Who is Spectral Blade?

Shadow Wardens are the Order’s secret operatives, held by a Mindseal: one directive driven into the mind like a wedge until the warden obeys it as his own. Spectral Blade broke free by accident, when he ate a Primal Stone, the power source of the Transcension towers the Eleven built. He felt like his own man again. “Master Soul’s a traitor... and so am I.”

One stone keeps his mind clear for a day or two, so he goes from tower to tower hunting the next, and Soul helps. He is cheerful about it: fame, hatred, desire, he says, everyone has their own Mindseal. He has remembered much of his past, but not his name, and Number 345 is not much of a name, so in the Crimson Forest he picks his own: a Shadow Warden with a big blade who moves like a spectre, Spectral Blade. Or just Blade.

Who Spectral Blade is to the others

  • Fellow traitor, friend

    Soul

Both have turned on the Order. Soul keeps him in Primal Stones, and calls him Brother Blade.

Every quest with Spectral Blade in it

  1. Tales

    A Severed Mindseal

It starts on top of the Sha-Chi Tower in Weeping Creek Valley: find the Primal Stone in the tower’s forge furnace and bring it to the friendly Shadow Warden. He turns up again in the Sha-Chi Towers of Pangzhen, the Crimson Forest, where he names himself, and the Soulrend Mountain Path, each time needing another stone. Finishing it earns the Spectral Blade trophy.

    How this quest turns out

On the frozen Soulrend Mountain Path he tells Soul he can hold out longer between stones, the Mindseal is almost gone, and the cold may slow his Sha-Chi. None of it is true.

What happens to Spectral Blade

The end of the story for this character

Near the top of Mount Soulrend there are no more towers and no more stones. Bleeding, he admits that everything he said about the Mindseal fading was a lie; he can feel it creeping back. He marvels at how red his blood is, and makes his first choice of his own: to take down a few more enemies for Soul. Soul tells him he is the only one ever to break free of the Mindseal, a true hero.

The game never says outright that he dies, but on the last climb he appears as a vision among the others: in his next life he would like to roam the Wulin and let the world know his name. “I am Spectral Blade!” The Statue of the Loyal Hero says he forgot his sect, his master’s face and even his old name, but remembered loyalty and righteousness, and lived by both.

“For the first time... I can choose for myself...”

What is the Mindseal?

How the Order controls its Shadow Wardens: a single directive driven into the mind like a wedge, which the warden then obeys as his own.

Why is he called Spectral Blade?

He chose it himself, once he had remembered everything but his name: a Shadow Warden who swings a big blade like a spectre.

What is a Primal Stone?

The power source of the Sha-Chi Towers. Eating one keeps his mind free of the Mindseal for a day or two.
