Who is Master Bi Hai?

Bi Hai wished only for peace across the realm and believed devotion to the Buddha’s law could save people from calamity. Even inside his old temple he could hear how the world had changed: the faithful no longer prayed for health and good harvests, but covered the Buddha’s face and begged for easy wealth, power and forgiveness they had not earned.

When Bi Yuan asked him to leave the mountain, his disciples begged to go in his place. He went himself: “these old bones know their duty.” One of those disciples, Huijue, has come down to Weeping Creek Valley looking for him; no word has come since he went to the Village of Lu.

In Chapter 3, Soul finds the village well sealed by red-threaded puppets holding the minds of three masters: Bi Yuan of the Tianxuan Sect, Bi Hai, and Sect Leader He of the Shenji School. They resisted the Herald’s Soul Displacement, and now they cannot die. They ask Soul to find their bodies in the village and grant them death. Bi Hai’s waits in the stream outside the Smuggler’s Tunnel, his robes in tatters, his half-open eyes still full of compassion.

Master Bi Hai of Kuye Temple

Beyond the Smuggler's Tunnel, Master Bi Hai's body waits in the stream. His monk's robes hang in tatters, and his half open eyes still show compassion. As chants resound, a golden qi bell descends to shield him from blades, fire, and water, while three Bronze Men appear to guard him and attack without rest until destroyed.

Master Bi Hai had long withdrawn from the world and seldom witnessed bloodshed. He wished only for peace across the realm, believing devotion to the Buddha's law could deliver people from calamity. Yet even the ancient temple could not shut out the sound of greed, and he came to realize that false teachings had already taken hold.

Master Bi Yuan's invitation gave him a chance to put that belief to the test. Though already in his seventies, he willingly faced danger, hoping through faith to guide the lost and prove the path of deliverance. Even knowing the Herald had taken villagers hostage and set a trap, he entered it willingly, offering himself in exchange for their freedom.

His body is bound, unable to live or die, yet his steadfast heart keeps Phantom Arts from leading him astray. Now he has burned himself as a lamp, casting a single ray of clarity. He hopes the prayer beads he leaves behind may help those still trapped see the emptiness of the Five Aggregates and find release from suffering.
