Who is Wealthy Merchant’s Son, Jin?

Jin’s mother died unjustly, and their father took a new wife, Fourth Madam. When Huang turned on Xiu in a drunken rage, Jin stepped in, cut off his own finger, and swore that if his father ever harmed his sister again he would slit his own throat before their ancestors’ graves. He gave up on his father long ago; Xiu is the only family he has left.

He and six others, all from Pangzhen, studied under the same master. Jin was the youngest, and his elder brothers loved him for the finger he gave for his sister. Xiu says he joined the Mandate, and that with that standing their father and Fourth Madam would treat her more kindly. He promised her he would come home safe once the Maskwalkers were gone.

You meet him in Chapter 7 in the shallows of Meigu Lake near the Village of Lu, as Grief-Stricken Jin: clad in red, a crimson blade in hand, wailing for home. Memory Flower I of his quest, The Severed Finger, is back in Pangzhen at Huang Manor.

Who Wealthy Merchant’s Son, Jin is to the others

  • Sister

    Wealthy Merchant’s Daughter, Xiu

Xiu, his little sister by the same mother. He cut off a finger to protect her, bought her rouge he knew she would love, and spent his two years in the Mandate quietly saving up her dowry.

“Today... I'll sever a finger. But if you ever harm my sister again, I'll slit my throat before our ancestors' graves!”

    In-game dialogue
  • Father, estranged

    Huang, Drunken Wealthy Merchant

Huang, the drunken wealthy merchant. Jin begs him to come to his senses, takes his anger in Xiu’s place, and tells him that before their ancestors he will name him for favouring a concubine over his wife and driving his children to death.

“Stop! Father, come to your senses! What has my sister done wrong?! She's your own flesh and blood!”

Every quest with Wealthy Merchant’s Son, Jin in it

  1. Tales

    A Brother Once More

Shopkeeper Niu gives you the Huang Manor Key in Pangzhen. Upstairs in the manor, by the sleeping Xiu, pick up Memory Flower I (The Severed Finger) and a letter. Niu then tells you Jin was seen wandering like a madman in the Meigu Lake shallows near the Village of Lu: that is where you find him, in Chapter 7. Beat him for Memory Flower II (Kindred Branches) and the Embroidered Shoes.

    How this quest turns out

The letter on Xiu’s bed is Jin’s. With it he sent Soul Displacement water: have your maid drink it, he writes, then cover her face with the Lady’s Blossom; the Lady is merciful. Huang’s maids later turned into wooden puppets and tore him apart, and Soul tells Niu that no one in the family is left alive, that it was retribution, and that the way the siblings took their revenge has something to do with the Lady of the Veil. A stone in the shallows hides the dowry Jin saved for Xiu, mostly ruined by water; the Embroidered Shoes were its last piece.

In the game’s own words

The game’s bestiary note on each form you fight. They are folded shut because some of them give away what happens later.

Grief-Stricken Jin

The leader of the Maskwalkers lurking before the shallow-water docks. Clad in red and wielding a crimson blade, he moves with eerie unpredictability. His wails summon a blood mist, despair given form. The six beside him go mad at the sound, their Sha-Chi surging as they throw themselves into the fray one after another.

All seven came from Pangzhen and studied under the same master. Jin was the youngest. After learning that his birth mother had died unjustly, he cut off a finger to protect his sister, earning the affection of his elder brothers. Later, they learned that their father and aunt despised their sister Xiu. Fearing Jin, they instead took out their anger on Xiu’s maid, with their cruelty growing worse by the day. Frail Xiu soon fell gravely ill, and the brothers were outraged.

They found Soul Displacement Water to ease Xiu’s suffering and swore that, should they ever rise in the world, they would protect the siblings and seek justice for them. If any brother fell, the others would care for his family. But none possessed exceptional talent, so they trained day and night and eventually underwent Transcension together.

Before they could make their mark, a strange illness swept through the town. They tried to return home, but bodies altered by Transcension could not withstand the Sha-Chi blanketing Meigu Lake. The faces of their loved ones slowly blurred beneath bloodlust and madness... They were only a few li from home, yet they would never return.

What happens to Wealthy Merchant’s Son, Jin

The end of the story for this character

Jin and his six brothers swore that if they ever rose in the world they would protect Jin and Xiu and win them justice, and that if one of them fell, the rest would care for his family. None of them had great talent, so they underwent Transcension together.

Before they could make their name, a strange illness swept Pangzhen. They tried to go home, but bodies altered by Transcension could not stand the Sha-Chi over Meigu Lake. The faces of the people they loved blurred into bloodlust and madness. They were only a few li from home, and they never got there. When Niu hears Jin was seen wandering like a madman, Soul’s answer is that he can barely be called human any more.

The game never says outright what became of Xiu after Jin’s letter. The quest leaves her asleep in an empty house.
